The death of Queen Elizabeth the Second was announced some two hours ago.

The notice was posted on the gates of the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, following the announcement.

The palace is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

A notice was also posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace.

Death notice

The queen “died peacefully” on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands, royal family officials announced. Her son Charles, 73, is now king and will be known as King Charles III.

We can expect an outpouring of grief and many media presentations over the days to come.
