Port Phillip students are encouraged to pound the pavement, ride their bikes or scoot to school as Walk to School Month returns from Monday 7 October to Friday 1 November 2019.

Walk to School Month is a VicHealth initiative, supported by Council, which encourages local primary school students to get active from a young age.

Council is supporting schools by assisting with Walk to School Month registration, providing practical assistance with planning and delivering events and a $200 Active Travel Rebate for every participating school.

Mayor Dick Gross is looking forward to seeing more young people taking up active travel options throughout Walk to School Month.

“Walking, riding and scooting to and from school is a fun and easy way for the young people of Port Phillip to build healthy habits for life and connect with their friends and family. Active travel is also great for our community and environment as it reduces traffic congestion and demand for parking,” Cr Gross said.

There are some fantastic prizes on offer for schools who participate in Walk to School Month and many schools host their own healthy breakfasts or picnics to celebrate.

A pedal-powered smoothie-bike will visit Port Phillip primary schools to refuel hungry students and promote active lifestyles. The school with the highest overall participation in Walk to School Month will win a smoothie-bike to keep.

Last year, 10 Port Phillip primary schools stepped up to the challenge, joining more than 140,000 students across Victoria in getting active on their way to school.
