Change the landscape for MGA, Australian photography and our artists
2020 is a year of celebration as MGA turns 30.
To kick 2020 off, we have commissioned 4 leading Australian artists to grapple with some of the most current and challenging issues of our time.
Peta Clancy, Lee Grant, Ponch Hawkes and David Rosetzky will explore the City of Monash by responding to key issues facing the community – a reflection of the city as a microcosm of the nation. They will shine their own inimitable lens on their chosen topic of interest – local indigenous sites of significance, the migrant experience, homelessness, and the LGBTQI+ community.
We need your help to support our artists to make these significant new bodies of work. Your gift will support artist commissioning fees, printing and framing of works for exhibition, and the development of a dedicated microsite to provide enhanced engagement with the exhibition content.
With your help we will create an exhibition that speaks to the important role photography has in connecting us to each other as the artists explore our community. With a selection of the works entering MGA’s collection, your contribution will help grow the only public collection solely dedicated to Australian photography.

Portrait of Monash: the ties that bind
The commission provides a powerful platform for people to share their stories, which builds awareness of the individual’s experience as they present their truth and the challenges they face. In doing so, MGA becomes a safe place for respectful discourse which leads to greater understanding, profile and advocacy. This is the transformative power of the arts at its most potent.
To realise these ambitious new bodies of work, we need your support to raise $30,000. This commission will have a significant impact on MGA and our legacy of ground-breaking exhibitions.
Build MGA’s Collection
Key works from each artist will be selected to enter MGA’s Collection. These works are uniquely relevant for MGA, our community and the people involved. The commissioning and creative process will be documented and explored to provide key insights for audiences from how you commission an artist and the artist’s creative process, through to the production and installation of the final work.
Donor recognition event
To celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of donors to Photography 500 and our annual giving program, we will host an intimate evening on 20 February 2020 with the curator during the Portrait of Monash exhibition.
