GASWORKS CIRCUS SHOWDOWN
Gasworks Arts Park is proud to present Gasworks Circus Showdown 2017. Watch seven of Australia’s finest circus and physical theatre acts battle over three nights of sizzling competition, 2 fierce heats on 9 & 10 August, and a spectacular finale on Saturday 12 August. A festival, competition and showcase, Circus Showdown highlights exceptional emerging circus and physical theatre entertainers whose remarkable skills span acrobatics, trapeze, juggling, aerial and physical comedy.
Held in the Gasworks Theatre the winning acts will share in a professional development prize pool valued at over $18,000, including $10,000 cash generously donated by the Gasworks Patrons Foundation. A judging panel and audience vote will decide who triumphs in the heats and who is crowned the 2017 Gasworks Circus Showdown Champion. Gasworks Circus Showdown is the only performance and professional development event of its kind in Australia.
The 2017 Acts
Four or More Circus present Out Of This World
Three astronauts have been sent on a mission to collect rare and magical space rocks, but where in the Universe are they? Join the team as they flip, tumble and fly through the air combining circus, science and fun in the dizzying world of Outer Space.
Gravity Dolls present Tandem
Inspired by retro video games, board games and the absurdity of Japanese games shows, Gravity Dolls draw from circus, movement, design and text to create stories that unfold in, around and above the audience. This entertainment packed circus show challenges the laws of gravity and evokes magical realism.
Adica Arts present Untied
Jessica’s thoughts and feelings from the last two years, evoked and entwined with her trapeze. Untied explores her physical changes, her loneliness and her release; alongside an oblivious male who’s always looking for new ways to have fun and satisfy his adrenaline seeking habits.
Hayley Hoopla presents Hoop Dog
HoopDogg is a real-life cartoon character with an explosive extravaganza to a killer soundtrack. Sporting an oversized ghetto blaster Hayley blends belly dance, flamenco, hip-hop, hula and swing dance with clowning and rapping, resulting in a quirky hula-hoop acts in here own style she’s dubbed hoop-hop.
Blindful present My Sight – Their Sight
A quirky and atmospheric interpretation of the relationship between being sighted and not sighted. Exploring shifts in power, poignant moments and pure physicality, Blindful is committed to making dance and circus accessible to all, entertaining those with disabilities and educating those without.
Circus Habesha
Circus Habesha taps into Ethiopia’s rich cultural and creative heritage, delving into the rhythms and roots of its many diverse aesthetic traditions. Five performers will fuse stories, comedy and acrobatics with the soundtrack of traditional and contemporary Ethiopian music.
Social Staples
Social Staples Brings the empty space between necessity and desire to life through a vivid display of acrobatics, dance and theatrical innovation. Explore and investigate the interesting truths of our day to day lives whilst balancing on the edge of common pantry products, questioning social standards and opening a whole new can of beans…
