Police are investigating the shocking theft and vandalism of a war memorial statue outside the Clayton RSL, after an offender tore parts of the bronze figure from its base in the early hours of Friday morning.
The incident occurred about 1:30am on 24 July 2026 at the RSL premises at 17 Carinish Road, where it is understood an unknown offender used physical force to pull apart the statue, valued at approximately $18,000.
What remains of the tribute is now stark and incomplete — only the bronze boots still stand at the site, with the rifle and slouch hat stolen.Lord Murray Schoorman, Melbourne’s famous crime scene photographer attended the RSL today and captured these images of what remains and of Victoria Police Sergeant Peter Dallan-Jones speaking to media about the crime. The Clayton RSL President Mr. Mike Newbond was still in shock but also addressed the media on the impacts this crime will have on his members, guests and community. Lord Murray’s images of the damaged statue, highlights the extent of the destruction inflicted on what is considered a significant symbol of remembrance for the local community.
The statue installation had just been completed with an official unveiling and launch scheduled for the weekend. The bronze commemorative plaque had not yet been installed and is still in its plastic packaging.Police have also released CCTV vision of a person they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
The motive behind the theft remains unclear, though the targeted removal of specific elements has raised concerns the items may have been taken for their metal value or as collector pieces.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area at the time, or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward.
