The 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme is For Our Elders. KHT pays respect to our Elders, acknowledging their important role in community and family. During NAIDOC Week, KHT has a range of programs celebrating the continuing culture of First Nation people and the important role Elders have played as knowledge holders.
Feather Flower Workshop with Aunty Glenda Nicholls
Sat 1 July 2023, 10am – 1pm
Join Aunty Glenda Nicholls (Waddi Waddi, Ngarrindjeri and Yorta Yorta) in making Feather Flowers. Learn about the cultural significance of feather flowers in Koorie communities, and view some of the precious feather flowers in the KHT Collection. This family friendly workshop is designed for kids to work alongside adults.
Create your own Murnong Daisy Necklace with Deanne Gilson
Wed 5 July, 11am – 2pm. Free
Join artist Dr Deanne Gilson (Wadawurrung), for a free school holiday family workshop. Learn about the significance of the murnong daisy within Victorian Aboriginal culture and create your own murnong daisy necklace.
Marngrook Community Workshop with Bernadette Atkinson
Thur 6 July, time tbc. Free
This workshop is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only. Join Bernadette Atkinson (Yorta Yorta) in a Marngrook making workshop. Make an authentic possum pelt ball using traditional techniques in a culturally safe space. All materials and tools provided.

Join Bronwyn David (Palawa-Tebrikunna) to make your own fun and unique earrings. Make one pair of interchangeable hoops with multiple layers.
Weaving Workshop with Donna Blackall

Join Donna Blackall (Yorta Yorta) to learn the craft of traditional coil weaving with natural materials to create a small basket or object.
KHT x NGV Community Tour
Sat 8 July, from 11am. Free
We invite our First Nations community members to join us for a morning of activities hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and the Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT). Meet at KHT for a tour of the current exhibition Second Skin: Essence of Country and then there will be an opportunity to view key Collection items on display. We then go to visit the NGVA for a tour with their curators of Indigenous art. Morning tea provided. This is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders community members only.

Bush Toys with Aunty Bronwyn Razem
Fri 30 June, 11am – 2pm. Free
Join Gunditjmara weaver Aunty Bronwyn Razem for an animal making workshop using natural materials and weaving techniques. Make a camp dog, kangaroo or other creature from the bush. This is a children’s workshop designed for adults to work with their kids.
