Bayside Gallery re-opens on 27 January 2021 with Bayside Local.
Now in its third year, Bayside Local is a much-anticipated annual exhibition that celebrates the high calibre of work produced by artists who live and work in the Bayside area. This year we are also including year 11 & 12 VCE students.
Debbie Symons: Sing: 13 March – 9 May
Sing is an immersive and poetic installation by Melbourne artist Debbie Symons. Incorporating 100 handwoven pendant nests containing individual speakers emitting bird calls, Sing evokes the delicate and intricate connections found in remaining ‘wild’ rainforest environments.
Her own path: 13 March – 9 May
Her own path brings together the works of four early 20th-century women artists. Margaret Baskerville, Jessie Traill, Norah Gurdon, and Janet Cumbrae Stewart, all of whom have links to Bayside and were trailblazers in their own way. Through innovation and tenacity, they had levels of success in their craft at a time when men dominated the field.
Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize: 14 May – 4 July
Established in 2015, the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize is a celebration of contemporary Australian painting. The finalist exhibition brings together a broad range of artists, both established and lesser-known, whose varied approaches to the painted medium conveys the breadth and diversity of painting in Australia today.
Bayside: Portrait of place: 10 July – 12 September
Bayside: Portrait of place brings together significant artworks from public and private collections dating from the mid-19th century to the present, revealing artists’ significant engagement with the area. Key works from esteemed artists such as Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin, Clarice Beckett, Arthur Boyd, Sandra Leveson, Roger Kemp and Yvette Coppersmith are brought together for the first time to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Bayside Gallery and the important artistic legacy of the area.
Cat Rabbit: The soft library: 18 September – 7 November
The soft library is an extraordinary new project by Melbourne-based textile artist Cat Rabbit. The artist transforms the Gallery into a fantastical library run by bears, or ‘libearians’, many of who are famous literary characters. Lovingly made by the artist in felt and fabric, the library houses books and animations and a special giant ‘storytime’ bear who invites visitors to sit and enjoy an audio story. This whimsical and delightful exhibition celebrates the freedom found in play and pays tribute to the library as a place of learning and wonder – a home for the endless possibilities of the imagination.
Material sound: 18 September – 7 November
Material Sound brings together six contemporary artists who each create an experience of sound within installations and apparatus constructed from everyday materials. Featuring newly commissioned work by artists Vicky Browne, Pia van Gelder, Caitlin Franzmann, Peter Blamey, Ross Manning, and Eric Demetriou, whose work and practice investigates sound and materials within art and performance.
Developed by the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), and toured nationally by MGNSW
