West Australian Music (WAM) are excited to announce the release of two new singles from the forthcoming Sounds of the Mid West album, both debut releases by the youngest artists on the compilation. ‘Edge of The Water’ from Jade Jackson and ‘Crave You’ from Ian Weggler are a snapshot of the blossoming new talent in the Mid West region of WA, and part of WAM’s fourteenth regional recording compilation, supported through the State Government of West Australia’s Contemporary Music Fund.

The long-locked Ian Weggler moved to Geraldton as an eight-year old from Germany, discovering his enthusiasm for music in the windy city. He quickly became a kid-wonder multi-instrumentalist in his teens and toured in multiple local acts, playing anywhere and everywhere. Ian’s debut single ‘Crave You’ explores the concept of hopeless romanticism through rose-tinted glasses and showcases his musical prowess, often compared to a young Ian Ross with more chops than a butcher shop.

Jade Jackson spent much of her life in the small seaside town of Dongara, where she found her voice and passion for song writing. Jade was often influenced by her coastal surroundings and what it means to be a young person growing up in regional Australia. With an unrecorded catalogue of more than thirty original songs, ‘Edge of The Water’ is the original composition that started it all, penned by Jade at the age of fifteen. The song is about escaping familiar hometown streets to somewhere new and searching for a new chapter in life. Jade continues to prolifically write her indi-folk tracks on guitar, piano and uke, showcasing creative pop vocal melodies.

Continuing WAM’s tradition of showcasing local visual artists, the Sounds of The Mid West album artwork features the work of Geraldton based artist, Jane Barndon, whose pieces reflect her love of the grand and beautiful Mid West region landscapes. The featured piece, ‘Inktober Day 29’, is part of the ‘Love Bush Colours’ series. Jane notes the series is aimed at  “identifying and capturing key recognisable elements within the local landscape, which are easily identifiable as coming from and being of ‘here’.”

The ten featured compilation acts will return to the stage on which Sounds of The Mid West was recorded for the official live launch at Geraldton’s Queens Park Theatre on Friday 16 April. The artists will perform live in what is slated to be a grand re-opening of the Mid West region’s premiere performance venue, thanks to our partnership with the City of Greater Geraldton. The local music festivity will be hosted by ABC Mid West and Wheatbelt Breakfast presenter Michelle Stanley, in what is set to be a historic evening celebrating the burgeoning talent that has been simmering in this region for the past few years. Tickets are now available at www.queensparktheatre.com.au.

Sounds of The Mid West will be launched via digital platforms on Friday 9 April 2021.
