Granite Hills 2017 Riesling
Some vineyard sites are very special and this is one of them. The Royal Melbourne Wine Show has an award for wines that are consistently high quality (three different vintages must be submitted). Llew Knight has won it twice including the inaugural award with this wine. The Victorian Trophy for Wines of Provenance is a nod to the wine producer who shows consistency and excellence over a minimum of 10 years. This award recognises the skill of the wine maker with three vintages of the same wine label being assessed. All wines must be 100% Victorian to be eligible. Granite Hills Riesling won the inaugural competition in 2014 with their 2013, 2008 and 2004.
Made from vines planted in 1974 on granite soils by Llew’s father – Gordon. Gordon was a fourth generation farmer in the region so he understood farming well. These old vines give an intensity of flavour that cannot be matched.
Macedon is one of the coolest wine regions in Australia. Although Riesling thrives in this coolness, site selection to ensure the grapes gain enough sunlight to ripen in essential.
2017 is a very good vintage for this wine. Classic Riesling with a soft but cleansing acid structure. Great for drinking now or hide away in a cellar for 10 or more years
