Absurd, Yet Relatable: 7 Quick Fire Questions With Em Barrett Ahead of Melbourne Fringe Debut

Winner of the Tour Ready Award at New Zealand Fringe, Em Barrett is debuting at Melbourne Fringe with her show: Ode To A Grape. We fired 7 quick questions at Em to find out more about her and her cult-comedy creation, Johann.

Your upcoming show is called “Ode To A Grape”, if you were a fruit would you be a grape, if not what fruit would you be and why?
I would be a lychee! Because I am sharp on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside.

What celebrity would love this show?
Josh Thomas. I think he would love the awkwardness of Johann.

How would you describe your style of comedy/performance to someone who’s never seen you before?Absurd yet relatable.

What was the initial inspiration to create this show?
Honestly my own journey as an artist! Johann is the manifestation of my inner demons come to life. He is like a much more awkward, and self defeating version of myself.

How do you want audiences to feel after seeing your show?
Inspired, hopeful, and sore from laughing.

If you could perform this show anywhere, where would it be?
In the State Library of Victoria

Do you have any pre-show rituals? If so, what are they?
Yes absolutely. I always do some yoga, a vocal warm up, and a speed run of my script. And eat something tasty!

Catch Johann in Ode To A Grape from 28 September to 3 October at The Motley Bauhaus. Tickets on sale now!
