Are you looking for a unique adventure? Then you’ve come to the right place! Australia has to offer a wide range of different interesting and awe-inspiring activities. However, one of the most distinctive and memorable ones is definitely whale watching!

With a total coastline length of almost 60 000km, Straya can provide you with many diverse spots where you can spot these magnificent mammals. However, certain areas are labelled as the best spots for whale watching! Not sure which way to turn? Try visiting some of these amazing places!

1. Magical whale nursery

Would you like to see a place where the magic happens? Then head to Logan Beach at Great Ocean Road where you can see a magnificent whale nursery. From June to October, you’ll have a unique opportunity to see southern right whales in shallows! How’s that possible?

Believe it or not, Logan’s Beach is a famous place where some whales give birth! Imagine seeing that with your own eyes! However, you’ll have to be patient. Most whales come there only for a short time to give birth and don’t stay for too long. You’ll be extremely lucky to catch them in the act. In the meantime, you can sunbathe on that beautiful beach.

2. Dance with whales near Brissy

If you happen to be in Brisbane from late July to early November, you shouldn’t miss a chance to see whales in Hervey Bay. This spot is about 300 km away from Brisbane and provides whales with a safe spot to hang out, as it’s protected by Fraser Island.

If you want to get closer to them, learn some of the whale facts and information that might be useful to you. You can even head to Port Douglas to experience this magical moment up close. Tie yourself with a rope to the boat, and examine these magnificent creatures from the water!

3. City of churches with a fantastic view

Known as the City of churches by locals and other Australians, Adelaide has to offer a magnificent whale watching experience you’ll never forget. It’s a significant location, both historically and culturally. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t spot those majestic mammals.

In Victor Harbour, only 80 kilometres away from Adelaide, southern right whales come to enjoy gorgeous turquoise waters and versatile marine life. They flock there once a year to breed, and usually stay from June to September. Climb the steep hills above the harbour, and watch the calm and clear waters below accompanied by southern right whales.

4. Emerald city luxurious cruises

Emerald city, better known as Sydney, has to offer a wide range of magnificent landmarks, from Sydney’s Opera House to the Harbour Bridge. However, this coastal metropolis can also provide you with mesmerising and luxurious sights of humpback whales! From May to late November, lucky passers-by will have a great chance of spotting whales from the coast!

However, spotting whales from the coast isn’t as memorable an experience as seeing them up close. So, you can hop on a luxurious or family-friendly cruise, and go whale watching in Sydney. Make this whale season an unforgettable journey you’ll always gladly remember.

5. Surround yourself with nature

If you adore being surrounded by nature, Perth is an ideal location for you to go whale watching! Known as an isolated city of Australia, this unique Western Australian destination is surrounded by the Indian Ocean from one side and the Australian outback from the other. When and where can you spot the mesmerising marine life?

Perth is one of the rare places in AU, where you can spot these magnificent creatures from land. As they travel back home or to their mating locations, they frequently pass through the Indian Ocean and can be spotted from June to November.

6. Visit a former whaling station

If you prefer the summer months, an ideal time to visit Australia for whale watching is from January to April. Then in Bremer Canyon, you can see pods of killer whales, often accompanied by sperm whales, blue sharks and giant squids. For such an experience, you’ll have to travel 70 kilometres offshore.

On the other hand, if you prefer to stick closer to the coastline, Albany is an ideal place for spotting these giant mammals. Blue whales and humpbacks can frequently be spotted from May to November. On top of that, don’t forget that the last whaling company used to be located in Albany. There, visitors can learn about these magnificent creatures in the former whaling station.

7. Heaven on Earth

You’ve surely wanted to experience a Paradise-like place on Earth. Even though Australia is filled with gorgeous cities and marvellous landscapes, there’s no quiet town like Eden. Located pretty close to Sydney, this magnificent destination has so much whale content to offer!

From September to November, waters near the town of Eden are ideal breeding grounds for humpback whales. On top of that, you may even catch a glimpse of their calves as well! People of the town of Eden pay special attention to the plastic items that kill whales and remove them from the seas. As they are so passionate about the whales, each year they host an annual whale festival in their honour. Besides the humpback whales, you can also see killer whales and sperm whales, and learn something more about them in the whale museum!

Conclusion

These are only the most remarkable locations where you can spot different kinds of whales in Australia. Bring your camera and patience to start this amazing and unforgettable journey where you’ll have a rare opportunity to spot these mesmerising creatures up close.
