From Mining Towns to the Energy Transition: Dee Dutton Joins Pangolin as Head of Business Development

Dee Dutton as Head of Business Development, Pangolin

Renewables now supply more than 40% of electricity in Australia’s National Electricity Market,¹ and organisations are being asked to make bigger energy decisions, faster.

It isn’t just an Australian story. Energy security was a major focus at Climate Week NYC in September,² with volatile fossil fuel prices driving up costs and sharpening the business case for clean energy.

But dollars alone won’t get projects built fast enough. It takes a clear view of where electrification pays off, a realistic assessment of the risks and implementation pathways, and a business case that stands up to scrutiny.

That is where Pangolin Associates comes in. With the appointment of Dee Dutton as Head of Business Development, Pangolin is strengthening its ability to help organisations make that transition.

Dee brings more than 20 years’ experience in business development and relationship management, including a decade in the energy sector. She spent seven years at Origin Energy across solar, battery storage and virtual power plants, then worked on commercial renewable energy and storage projects for large businesses and local government.

Growing up in the Queensland mining towns of Mary Kathleen, near Mount Isa, and Middlemount, in the Bowen Basin, Dee saw how closely energy, industry and community are connected. A career in renewable energy has since shown her what it takes for businesses to invest in change.

That experience matters as the transition moves into its implementation phase. Grid constraints, approval delays, supply chain constraints and surging power demand from data centres, industry and heatwaves were all on the agenda at Climate Week NYC,² and organisations need help turning ambition into projects that actually get built.

At Pangolin Associates, Dee will lead our work to build new client relationships, working with organisations to understand their climate and energy priorities and bringing in the team that can deliver. Pangolin identifies and delivers high-priority fuel transition and electrification projects across vehicle fleets, manufacturing facilities, industrial assets, and mobile plant and equipment.

Every engagement starts with detailed feasibility assessments that weigh up the opportunities, risks and implementation pathways, and a business case for moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

The team is led by Principal Gary Cafe, formerly a Director within Advisory Services at Schneider Electric. Consulting Director Robbert Slooten has overseen more than 20 TWh of PPA offtake contracting, Principal Vladimir Moscoso held senior finance roles at BHP for almost 15 years, and Principal Phil Senn was previously climate strategy lead at Woolworths and Inghams. Together they support clients through delivery, coordinating delivery partners, identifying funding opportunities, managing procurement and optimising asset performance, so the result is lasting operational, environmental and commercial value, from first assessment through to a project that’s up and running.

“Dee has spent a decade in the energy sector, from solar, batteries and virtual power plants at Origin Energy to commercial projects for large businesses and local government. She understands what it takes for a business to invest in change, and she knows a good technical solution is only part of the answer. We look forward to Dee’s energetic nature adding even more effervescence to our office and client relationships,” said Iain Smale, Managing Director at Pangolin Associates.

Dee’s appointment reflects Pangolin’s continued investment in helping organisations turn their climate and energy priorities into practical action.
