listen to older voices: graham maloney- part 1 Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced by Rob Greaves for Wesley Mission Victoria and podcast through the Toorak Times.

Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principal of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.

This program was originally aired in February 2008 and is being repeated as part of our “Golden Moments” programs. This is where we feature a story from the past that warrants a second broadcast for the sake of those who may have missed it the first time.

Graham was originally interviewed in May of 2008. Born in 1943 Graham shares stories of growing up in an inner Melbourne, near the Melbourne Zoo in a temporary suburb called Camp Pell, a place that no longer exists. He share many stories and many amusing anecdotes before moving us to an area in the 1950’s which really was the “wilds” of the SE of Melbourne. This is the now highly built up suburb of Ashburton.

[Children playing at Camp Pell – Melbourne]

Graham reminds us of the “tribal mentality” of the kid’s gangs of the day and how he and his friends made their own fun through their adventurous outdoor play. This is a fabulous “snapshot” of life in Melbourne’s suburbs during the 1950’s and 1960’s as seen through the eyes of a kid.

He has so many funny stories, such as watching the road zip by under their feet as their father drove them in his car, and then there is the incredibly funny trailer incident.
