Organised by the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Committee, the fully catered event brought together community members, dignitaries, and veterans in a fitting finale to an exhibition that has left a lasting impression across the region. Among the notable attendees were Macedon Ranges Shire Mayor Cr Kate Kendall, elected in November 2025, alongside her ward councillor Janet Pearce. Their presence highlighted the importance of the exhibition not only as an artistic achievement, but as a meaningful act of community remembrance.

Also in attendance was Mr Roger Watkins (Ret.), of the Royal Australian Navy, whose personal connection to Australia’s military history runs deep, his father having served in France during World War I from 1914 to 1918. Adding to the event’s diverse representation was Sam CJ Muscat KSJ, radio presenter of The Vibe on WynFM, who joined guests in reflecting on the exhibition’s themes of service and sacrifice.

At the centre of the exhibition is the work of acclaimed Melbourne artist George Petrou OAM, whose striking portraits capture what many describe as the enduring essence of the Anzac spirit. Haunting and poignant, Petrou’s collection portrays Australians from all walks of life, ordinary individuals whose courage, resilience, and mateship have defined the nation’s military legacy.

Drawing on both historical imagery and contemporary stories, Petrou has travelled across Australia and overseas to connect past and present through his art. The result is a powerful and evocative body of work that offers a deeply personal insight into the lives and sacrifices of those who have served.
