Thousands more homes connected as digital meter rollout reaches major milestone

More than 100,000 digital water meters have now been installed across Yarra Valley Water’s service area, marking a major milestone in the rollout of the technology across Melbourne’s north and east.

The technology is helping customers better understand their water use, detect leaks sooner and save precious drinking water.

More than 57,000 digital meters have been installed across Melbourne’s north and more than 43,000 across Melbourne’s east, with the rollout continuing across Yarra Valley Water’s network.

Crews are set to install digital meters in Brunswick, Eltham, Mulgrave, Pascoe Vale, Pascoe Vale South and Wheelers Hill over the coming months, bringing the benefits of the technology to thousands more customers.

Since rollout began, Yarra Valley Water’s digital meters have helped identify more than 15,000 leaks, saving approximately 440 megalitres of drinking water, the equivalent of 178 Olympic sized swimming pools.

Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Natalie Foeng said reaching 100,000 installations demonstrated the value digital meters were already delivering for customers.

“Reaching 100,000 digital meter installations is a significant milestone, and we’re excited to see more customers across Melbourne benefiting from the technology as the rollout expands,” Ms Foeng said.

“Digital meters are helping customers better understand their water use and detect leaks sooner, often before they would have otherwise become aware of an issue.

“With Melbourne experiencing some of the driest conditions in decades over the past two years, the technology is also helping customers identify opportunities to save water when every drop counts.”

Yarra Valley Water’s transition to a digital meter fleet will continue as rollout progresses across its service area.
