Every self-managed super fund (SMSF) must pass an annual audit. For 2023–24, the Australian Taxation Office pegs the median audit fee at $550. Yet “simple” audits appear online for under $300, while full-service bundles—accounts, tax return, and audit—start around $1,300 plus GST. Cost isn’t the only concern: ASIC recorded 64 enforcement actions against SMSF auditors in the past financial year. We analysed fee tables, regulator releases, software specs, and practitioner feedback to rank six stand-out providers and spell out exactly what each price buys.

How we picked the six
Method beats hunches. We scraped Google Australia for “SMSF audit service” and close variants each month from January to September 2026. Any firm that appeared consistently then faced four non-negotiables:
- actively completes SMSF audits in 2026;
- maintains an Australian presence;
- names its approved signing auditor on request.
The survivors, mostly audit-only specialists with a few all-in administrators, were scored on seven risk-weighted criteria:
- Fee transparency, 20 percent
- Independence, 20 percent
- Complex-asset capability, 20 percent
- Turnaround clarity, 10 percent
- Technology and security, 10 percent
- Support scope, 15 percent
- Independent evidence, 5 percent
Missing GST notes, hidden extras, or undisclosed off-shoring lost points. Independence carried equal weight because ASIC recorded 64 actions against SMSF auditors in FY 2025-26 (media release, July 24, 2026). We checked every finalist’s ASIC registration and screened for fee-dependency flags in the APES 110 code.
Complex assets such as crypto, direct property, and private loans ranked alongside price and independence because they can double the audit workload. Turnaround and tech mattered slightly less but still influence the 15 May lodgement deadline.
Customer reviews counted only when independent and recent; anonymous star ratings did not move the dial.
Throughout, we benchmarked fees against the ATO’s 2023-24 median audit cost of $550 to keep comparisons grounded in public data.
1. SMSF Australia: best all-in package for complex assets
SMSF Australia is a one-stop service: the national team prepares the accounts, lodges the tax return, updates the deed, and arranges the independent audit.
Current pricing (captured September 15 2026)
- Basic portfolio (bank accounts, term deposits, listed shares, managed funds): $1,300 + GST
- Complex (up to two direct properties, crypto, precious metals, collectibles): $1,600 + GST
- Very complex (three or more properties, unlisted assets, private loans, derivatives, NFTs, prior contraventions): from $2,000 + GST
Because the audit fee sits inside each tier — the firm itemises $300 for the external auditor within the basic tier — trustees avoid a second invoice at year-end. SMSF Australia states the auditor is independent of the accountant who prepared the files; it does not publish the auditor’s name.
Complex assets are the headline strength. Class Super feeds transactions directly into the audit file, and the firm’s in-house SMSF lawyers resolve deed updates or bare-trust issues without outside referrals.
Support runs year-round: a named accountant answers queries as they arise, which cuts last-minute audit questions for funds holding crypto or managing tenants. (For any crypto investment, the trust deed must permit it, the investment strategy must cover it, the wallet must be in the fund’s name, the asset cannot be acquired from a member or related party, and it must be valued at 30 June.)
Trade-offs
- No stand-alone audit-only option
- Website lists no turnaround guarantee; speed depends on file completeness
Trustees seeking a single, fixed annual fee that covers bookkeeping, tax, and audit, with legal support on tap, will find SMSF Australia a clear packaged choice.
2. Super Audits: best audit-only value with a five-day turnaround
Super Audits is a straight-talking, audit-only shop: most simple funds cost under $300 and receive a signed report within five working days (according to the Super Audits website). Every fund is quoted individually, with a response inside 24 hours, so the fee is fixed and capped before work starts — but no public definition of a “simple” fund is published.
All work stays in Australia, and the listed signing auditor holds an active ASIC SMSF-auditor number, meeting APES 110 independence requirements. Complex assets are welcome; the firm audits crypto, related-party trusts, overseas holdings, and private companies, although extra documents—and sometimes extra cost—may be required.
Support exceeds the price tag. Partners answer technical questions by phone before you upload the file, which reduces stop-start emails once the clock begins.
Watch-outs
- The five-day timer begins only after a complete evidence pack is lodged; missing statements pause the SLA.
- Quoted fees exclude GST, and every fund receives a written quote first, so confirm the amount before promising clients a sub-$300 bill.
Firms that manage many compliant SMSFs and want a predictable, Australian-based audit cleared in about a week will find Super Audits a sharp price-to-speed choice.
3. ASF Audits: built for volume without losing finesse
ASF Audits is designed for accounting practices that handle hundreds (sometimes thousands) of SMSFs each year. Pricing is quote-only, but partners say wholesale rates drop as volumes rise, keeping trustee costs competitive.
Turnaround and tech
The firm targets a five-working-day sign-off for most funds and clears files faster when data feeds in cleanly. Skylight, its in-house portal, connects to Class, BGL 360, and SuperMate, pulling bank and broker data without manual uploads.
Independence and scope
ASF prepares no accounts and sells no admin service. It is based in Adelaide and states it uses offshore team support alongside its 130+ specialist auditors — ask how files are handled if that matters to you. Every file is reviewed by an ASIC-registered SMSF auditor focused solely on assurance.
Complex-asset workflow
Crypto wallets, direct property, and related-party loans trigger tailored checklists rather than a blanket surcharge, so firms know exactly which documents to supply.
Trade-offs
- No public fee schedule; you must request a quote to benchmark costs.
- Smaller firms seeking a one-off trustee audit may find the onboarding heavier than micro-focused competitors.
Large practices that value scale, software integration, and a stated five-day benchmark—while preserving independence—will find ASF Audits a reliable, high-capacity partner.
4. SMSF Audit Services Group: flat fees that stay flat
Surprise extras are rare here: the firm publishes a $350–$450 + GST audit range that already covers property-title searches, ASIC extracts, and Auditor Contravention Report lodgement (per the SMSF Audit Services Group fee page). Accountants can drop one figure straight into an engagement letter.
Independence
SMSF Audit Services Group is audit-only, prepares no accounts, and keeps every file onshore. The listed signing auditor holds an active ASIC registration with no current conditions.
Turnaround and tech
The website sets no clock, and clients report a two-to-three-week cycle for bulk lodgements, faster when evidence arrives clean. Workflow relies on CloudOffis bulk uploads; BGL or Class files export smoothly but do not feed live into the portal.
Service style
Partners answer calls, walk through contraventions, and draft trustee responses at no extra charge, support often billed separately by cheaper auditors.
Trade-offs
- No defined SLA; confirm timing before year-end crunch.
- Traditional tech stack may feel slow next to real-time API rivals.
If you value a fixed, fully loaded audit fee plus human guidance on property or loan issues, SMSF Audit Services Group delivers cost certainty without hidden charges.
5. Assurify: tech-driven speed for busy practices
Assurify puts turnaround first: its site reports an average 3.98-business-day audit over the past 12 months (Assurify website). For firms racing the 15 May lodgement deadline, those extra days saved over five-day providers can ease pressure.
Security and data flow
BGL and Class feeds route straight into a Microsoft Azure environment hosted in Australia, with multi-factor login and full access logs.
Pricing
Fees are quote-only. A National Tax & Accountants Association channel lists category prices, but those are reseller rates; always request a direct written quote and confirm GST treatment before comparing.
Independence
The firm lists eight ASIC-registered SMSF auditors and provides the signer’s name before engagement. It offers no bookkeeping or admin services, so self-review risk stays low.
Complex assets
Crypto wallets, direct property, and private credit are routine. Auditors ask for cold-wallet proofs or third-party valuations instead of accepting unsupported figures.
Support model
Each practice gets a dedicated manager who tracks missing evidence and flags contraventions early, giving you time to fix issues before the return is lodged.
Trade-offs
- Trustees cannot engage directly; an accountant or adviser must refer the fund.
- No public price band means a short scoping call is unavoidable.
For practices embedded in BGL or Class that need sub-four-day audit speed on an Australian-hosted platform, Assurify sets the current pace.
6. SMSF Audit Link: local team with a 3–5-day SLA
SMSF Audit Link is a compact, audit-only practice that keeps every file onshore and promises a 3–5 business day turnaround for standard funds. Pricing is fixed but not published; accountants receive a quote after a short scoping call.
Scope and process
The firm works across bank accounts, listed shares and managed funds, and advertises experience with related-party loans and pension commencements. BGL 360, Class and SuperMate connect to its secure audit dashboard with one-click integration and real-time data sync.
Support model
A named manager reviews submissions within 24 hours, flags missing documents, and is available by phone for follow-up questions.
Trade-offs
- No public fee, so benchmarking requires a quote.
- SLA applies only to standard assets; complex funds are referred elsewhere.
For trustees with straightforward portfolios who want an onshore audit signed inside a working week, SMSF Audit Link offers a clear, fixed-fee option.
Conclusion
Remember: an audit-only fee buys just the independent sign-off, while an all-in fee wraps in bookkeeping, tax, and the audit itself. Pick the column that fits your fund before you compare numbers.
