I was moved when reading a small picture book by Amelia Trezise, 15 years old, who also created the illustrations. Her illustrations are evocative.

‘Never Alone’ tells the story of a boy whose sister had to go to hospital. A range of emotions were explained, but the hardest was his sense of feeling abandoned and invisible when the focus was on his sister. By talking about his fear, anger, and sadness with his parents, he was able to discover that these were normal feelings. His parents reassured him, and even organised for him to speak to other kids who felt similar.

His courage in naming his feelings, and expressing them to his parents ensureed that everyone could heal, and he felt reconnected.

In uncertain times, being able to speak up and be heard is so important.

Amelia Trezise wrote a wise, psychologically minded book that reminds us all of the importance of feeling loved and part of our family. Keep writing, Amelia!
