Strategic equipment ownership model supports project milestones and delivery resilience for the Parkes Special Activation Precinct.
As Australia’s energy infrastructure market faces increasing levels of activity, placing greater pressure on specialist transmission resources and an already stretched hire market, Intium is investing in and deploying its own specialist transmission equipment to improve control over key aspects of project delivery.
By owning and deploying its own specialist equipment, Intium is reducing its exposure to equipment hire constraints, which supports greater delivery certainty and commercial resilience for renewable energy projects.
This ownership model is supporting delivery at the Parkes Special Activation Precinct, a project of national significance in regional New South Wales. In the first live deployment of its newly purchased piling equipment, Intium has achieved significant cost savings on selected equipment compared with equivalent external hire arrangements, while improving control over equipment availability and construction sequencing, and reducing the need to secure equivalent plant hire up to 3 months in advance.
By reducing reliance on the external hire market, Intium’s ownership model has supported delivery at the Parkes project through:
-
Cost savings on selected equipment, including piling rigs, compared with equivalent external hire arrangements.
-
Reduced reliance on external hire equipment for critical piling rigs, with additional specialist equipment, including elevated work platforms, being procured to further support more predictable construction sequencing and project delivery.
-
Direct oversight of equipment quality and maintenance, supporting safe and reliable project delivery.
Beyond the immediate project metrics, Intium’s equipment ownership model demonstrates how targeted investment in specialist equipment can improve mobilisation readiness, reduce exposure to hire-market constraints and support more reliable delivery of renewable energy infrastructure projects.
“In a constrained market, our clients need confidence that projects won’t be delayed by equipment availability.” said Nathan Rhodes, Executive General Manager of Intium. “By owning specialist equipment and bringing core engineering in-house, we are improving mobilisation readiness and giving our teams greater control over equipment-dependent parts of delivery. Internal project assessments indicate our in-house engineering and strategic equipment ownership model are contributing to reduced delivery timeframes by up to 20%, helping us support projects like Parkes with greater certainty and responsiveness.”
Intium is supporting and contributing to the development of the Parkes Special Activation Precinct – a 4,800 hectare development expected to support long-term economic growth and up to 3,000 regional jobs. Intium’s scope includes installing transmission poles using its newly purchased specialist fleet, constructing 8.5 kilometres of high voltage transmission lines, and delivery associated upgrades to key road crossings.
Babu Kumar, General Manager of Engineering and Delivery said, “When we pair our in-house engineering expertise with site-ready, owned equipment, we improve resource planning and mobilisation readiness. In this industry, delays drive costs and Intium’s model is designed to give our team greater control over equipment availability, sequencing and delivery readiness.”
This milestone at Parkes follows Intium’s recent announcement regarding the expansion of its in-house engineering capability, reinforcing Intium’s integrated delivery approach aimed at improving project coordination, mobilisation readiness and operational efficiency.
